WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) addressed the Senate floor, expressing deep concern over the surge of antisemitic harassment and violence targeting Jewish students on college campuses across the nation. Thune criticized President Biden's response to the issue, calling for immediate action to protect Jewish students.

Thune highlighted the distressing incidents unfolding on college campuses, stating, "We’ve witnessed a wave of antisemitism sweep college campuses across the country." He emphasized the need for federal intervention to enforce the law and safeguard Jewish students from intimidation and violence.

The Senator condemned the alarming rise of antisemitic behavior, noting instances where Jewish students were subjected to hateful slogans and threats. He referenced a CBS article detailing antisemitic chants near Columbia University, expressing disbelief at the resurgence of such hatred in the United States.

Jewish student Olivia Feldman shared her harrowing experiences, revealing the fear and anxiety she faces on campus. Feldman disclosed, "No, I do not feel safe on campus. I’ve been called names, I’ve been spit at," emphasizing the emotional toll of such targeted attacks.

Additionally, another Jewish student at Columbia University recounted violent encounters, stating, "We have been attacked by sticks outside our library. We have been attacked by angry mobs and we have been threatened to ‘Keep f—ing running.’" These testimonies underscored the urgent need for action to address the escalating threats faced by Jewish students.

Thune called for a comprehensive response to combat antisemitism on college campuses, urging swift intervention from universities, local law enforcement, and federal authorities. He criticized the lack of leadership from the Biden administration in addressing the issue, questioning the silence on protecting Jewish students from harm.

In conclusion, Thune emphasized the imperative of ensuring the safety and well-being of Jewish students in educational environments. He urged immediate action to confront antisemitic harassment and violence, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rights and security of all students.
