The Black Hills State University School of Business is announcing the addition of a health services administration specialization to their business administration degree.

The new specialization will prepare students for planning, directing, and coordinating resources and activities within health services. Graduates will be prepared to serve as managers, administrators, and financial officers within the field of healthcare.

Interim Chair of the School of Business at BHSU Pat Mackin said this specialization comes at an opportune time for students wanting to enter a field with incredible growth potential.Demand for this specialization has increased in recent years with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting an estimated 28% increase in medical and health services managers between 2021 and 2031.

“The healthcare industry continues to grow, so there are a lot of jobs out there within this field,” Mackin said. “This specialization really will prepare students for the unique business situations that come with working in healthcare. It’s very different from other business environments—you’re sometimes dealing with life and death situations.”

Mackin added that the new health services administration specialization will serve as a continuing education opportunity for healthcare workers wanting to move into administrative roles within their organization.

Additionally, adding this new specialization was an important part of BHSU’s recent partnership with Ellsworth Air Force Base. Courses for the program will be offered in-person, online, and remotely at Ellsworth for both military and civilians.

The Health Services Specialization will become part of the BHSU academic catalog in Fall 2023.
