Spearfish Fire Department presents colors for local hero

The Spearfish Fire Department honored and presented colors for local hero, Colonel John Michael “Mike” Kain, U.S. Army, Retired, during the funeral escort to the Black Hills National Cemetery Friday, which included the Black Hills American Legion Riders, Spearfish Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Spearfish Police Department, and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office. Kain served for more than 29 years as an active-duty Army Officer, serving in Vietnam and Desert Storm. During his military service, he received several awards and commendations, and after retiring to Spearfish Canyon, he remained active with the Spearfish American Legion Riders, Deadwood VFW, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), MOAA (Military Officers Association of America), and the Spearfish Canyon Volunteer Fire Department.
