Cost of college went up for all students at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

In-state tuition and fees rose 1.5 percent for 2018-19 at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

South Dakota residents paid $10,560 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $160 more than the $10,400 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 40.3 percent more than residents this year, or $14,820. Their price tag grew 1.6 percent from $14,580 in 2017-18.

About 39 percent of the school's undergraduate population are South Dakota residents. About 59 percent are residents of other states and 2 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 93 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 377 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.7 million and 285 students took out student loans totaling more than $1.9 million.

Including all undergraduates (2,654), 1,415 students used grants or scholarships totaling $7.9 million, and 1,263 students took out $8.4 million in federal student loans.
