Cost of college went up for all students at Black Hills State University

In-state tuition and fees rose 1.5 percent for 2018-19 at Black Hills State University, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

South Dakota residents paid $8,733 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $131 more than the $8,602 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 34.9 percent more than residents this year, or $11,778. Their price tag grew 1.5 percent from $11,602 in 2017-18.

About 69 percent of the school's undergraduate population are South Dakota residents. And about 30 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 91 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 376 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.7 million and 363 students took out student loans totaling more than $2.6 million.

Including all undergraduates (4,035), 1,810 students used grants or scholarships totaling $8.9 million, and 1,772 students took out $11.7 million in federal student loans.
