BHSU Photography Students Receive Honorable Mention in International Competition

The photography program at Black Hills State University is celebrating the honorable mention distinctions of two of its students in the 19th Annual Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers. Seniors Kylee Myers and Nicole Klungness submitted artwork created in their Contemporary Issues in Photography class for consideration for the award.

“When I found out, I immediately started crying, but happy tears for sure. It’s always been a goal of mine to get into a big international show, so it was kind of a dream come true!” Klungness said of the opportunity. “I’m hoping my inclusion in this exhibition will open more opportunities for me to pursue art as a career. Being able to have professionals in the field see my work is super exciting to me.”

The works of Myers and Klungness will also appear in an exhibition in Barcelona, Spain at the FotoNostrum gallery, along with others who have had work selected by jurors Laura Ann Noble from the United Kingdom and Jennie Rickets from Ireland.

Kylee Myers said of her acceptance to the exhibition, “I felt, and still feel, ecstatic and thankful for this opportunity. Thinking about the amount of time and work I have put into my craft; it feels refreshing to have that work recognized.” Myers continued, “Being invited to show my work has encouraged and reassured me to continue making art.”

Both students will also have their work on display in the group exhibition “Observations on Introspection,” a show of artwork created by the Contemporary Issues in Photography class that will have an opening reception on Tuesday, Dec. 6th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the basement of Jonas Academic Hall.
