Just a friendly reminder to all Lead homeowners,
There are several methods that a homeowner can do to prevent frozen water lines:
• The best method is to insulate any exposed water lines in unheated basements, crawl spaces and into foundations.
• Portable heaters can be set up to keep lines thawed or to assist in the thawing of water lines. Please be aware that portable heaters should be attended at all times to prevent fires from occurring.
• A water line can be opened to allow a pencil-thin stream of water to continue to flow.
• Another “trick” is to run a faucet at full bore for about a minute before bedtime, if you get up in the middle of the night, do it again, and once more early in the morning. This may flush any ice crystals that were forming prevent freezing.
While the City of Lead will do all that is possible to work with homeowners, the service lines into each residence are the homeowner’s responsibility and the City of Lead will not thaw out frozen residential water lines.
