WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), along with a bipartisan group of colleagues, are urging President Biden to prioritize the summertime sale of E15 fuel, as reported in a press release. The senators emphasize the importance of leveraging American biofuels to drive down fuel costs for consumers.
In a joint statement, the senators highlighted the significance of biofuels, stating, “[W]e must pursue an all-of-the-above energy strategy, which includes leveraging domestic biofuels.” They pointed out that permitting the sale of higher blends of biofuels like E15 during the summer driving season not only bolsters the domestic fuel supply but also lowers consumer costs while promoting the environmental benefits of American biofuels and modern agriculture.
Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy, echoed the senators' sentiments, expressing concern that without action from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American motorists could lose access to a more affordable fuel option this summer. Skor emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "We can’t afford to wait any longer – we need EPA to act now."
Harold Wolle, president of the National Corn Growers Association, emphasized the benefits of providing access to lower-carbon fuel like E15, noting that it would not only save drivers money at the pump but also support farmers across the country. Wolle stressed the importance of timely action as the summer months approach.
Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, commended Senators Thune and Durbin for their efforts and highlighted the necessity of ensuring U.S. consumers have access to E15 amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts and low oil and fuel supplies.
The letter addressed to President Biden, signed by several other senators, emphasized the importance of extending the Reid vapor pressure (RVP) waiver to allow the sale of E15 during the 2024 summer driving season. The senators highlighted the critical role of biofuels in addressing energy supply challenges and reducing consumer costs, particularly in the current global energy landscape.
The bipartisan group of senators urged the administration to take swift executive action to permit the nationwide sale of E15, emphasizing the benefits of biofuels in enhancing energy security, reducing emissions, and supporting American agriculture.
The senators concluded the letter by expressing their gratitude for the bipartisan support and urging President Biden to consider their request promptly.
