U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) today paid tribute on the Senate floor to former Sen. Jim Inhofe, honoring his life of service to the people of Oklahoma.
Thune's remarks included a reflection on Inhofe's influence and legacy: "Mr. President, I want to join with Senator Reed and so many of my colleagues today as we express our great sorrow in learning about the death of Senator Jim Inhofe."
Thune described Inhofe as an icon in the Senate and a personal inspiration: "When I first got here, he was the chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee in the Senate and worked with me. My first legislative accomplishments came as a result of him and his staff working with me."
He praised Inhofe's leadership and work ethic: "I'm grateful for his legislative prowess, for his leadership as the chairman of not only that committee but later the Senate Armed Services Committee."
Thune recounted their travels together, highlighting Inhofe's energy and dedication: "My first trip, actually, as a senator abroad was to Iraq, and I went with Senator Inhofe... He had boundless energy and an ability to work people half his age under the table."
In addition to acknowledging Inhofe's military background, Thune noted his connection with soldiers: "Every place that we went, we would meet with soldiers who respected him for that... also for the leadership that he provided for our country when it came to important national security matters."
Thune also shared personal experiences from visiting Oklahoma with Inhofe: "I flew in an airplane with Senator Inhofe; he was a renowned pilot." He emphasized how impressed everyone was by Inhofe’s work ethic.
Reflecting on their trips abroad, Thune said: "I know his many trips to the continent of Africa... where he built relationships, advocated for American ideals."
Finally, Thune highlighted Inhofe’s faith: "Jim was a man of deep and profound faith... For many years, he hosted Chaplain Black's Bible study in his office."
He concluded by expressing condolences: "My thoughts and prayers today are with Jim's wife Kay and with his family. Jim will be sorely missed." Quoting Apostle Paul’s words on hope beyond death, Thune added comfort through scripture.
"Mr. President," Thune concluded solemnly before yielding the floor.
