U.S. Senator John Thune from South Dakota addressed the Senate floor to express his disapproval of the International Criminal Court's (ICC) recent actions. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant, which Thune described as "outrageous, unlawful, and dangerous."
Thune urged Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to bring forward bipartisan legislation that would impose sanctions on the ICC for what he termed its "unlawful action." He emphasized Israel's right to self-defense and argued that the ICC's decisions could potentially endanger not only Israel but also pose future threats to the United States.
"The Senate needs to stand strongly with our ally at this time," Thune stated. He highlighted a recent bipartisan effort in the Senate rejecting resolutions that would have denied lethal aid to Israel, calling it a strong message of support.
Thune further warned that if Schumer does not act on bringing up the sanctions bill, the incoming Republican majority in the next Congress will prioritize such legislation. "We will stand with Israel and make this bill – and other supportive legislation – a top priority in the next Congress," he declared.
In closing, Thune assured that once Republicans regain control of the Senate, they will reinforce U.S. support for Israel unequivocally.
