U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) addressed the Senate floor regarding the agenda for the upcoming year, emphasizing a busy schedule with minimal recess in the first 100 days. Thune highlighted key priorities such as confirming President Trump's nominees and securing resources for border security.
Thune stated, “Mr. President, my office recently released the 2025 Senate calendar." He continued by outlining an aggressive schedule with frequent Friday votes, noting, "That’s because we have a lot of work to do."
A primary focus will be on confirming President Trump’s Cabinet nominees swiftly. Thune remarked, “The American people handed President Trump and Vice President-elect Vance a decisive mandate in November.”
Border security is another significant priority. Thune mentioned a reconciliation package aimed at investing in border security and immigration enforcement: “The border and enforcement crisis under President Biden has left a gaping hole in our national security.” The package will aim to increase resources for Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and Border Patrol agents.
Other legislative goals include utilizing the Congressional Review Act to reverse certain Biden administration regulations, expanding tax relief measures from Trump's first term, and addressing military readiness through national security initiatives.
Thune also stressed the importance of regular-order consideration of appropriations bills to avoid end-of-year legislative congestion. He stated, “Deciding how taxpayer money is spent is a serious responsibility.”
Finally, he indicated plans to bring forth a farm bill in 2025: “We’re now more than a year overdue on the next bill.” Overall, Thune anticipates an intense year ahead but sees it as an opportunity to deliver results for Americans.
