As the nation reflects on the life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter, congressional leaders have announced plans for him to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Senate Majority Leader-elect Thune, Speaker Johnson, Senate Democratic Leader Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Jeffries conveyed their intentions in a letter addressed to James Carter III and the Carter Center.
The arrangements will allow President Carter's remains to lie in state from January 7th afternoon until the morning of January 9th. During this period, the Capitol will be accessible to the public at designated times for those wishing to pay their respects.
The letter sent by congressional leaders expressed condolences on behalf of Congress and the American people. It stated: "In recognition of President Carter’s long and distinguished service to the nation, it is our intention to ask the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate to permit his remains lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol."
The letter concluded with an appeal for approval from James Carter III: "With your approval, we will move forward with these arrangements so that the American people have the opportunity to pay their respects to President Carter before he is laid to rest."
