U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune took to the Senate floor to honor his high school basketball and track coach, Jerry Applebee, who recently passed away. Thune shared personal memories and highlighted the impact Coach Applebee had on his life.
Thune described Applebee as a significant influence during his formative years, emphasizing values like hard work and sportsmanship. "He was a deeply formative figure for me in my teenage years," Thune stated. He also mentioned that together with his father, Applebee founded the Jones County Invitational basketball tournament, an event that remains important to Thune.
Reflecting on moments from his athletic past, Thune recounted playing under Coach Applebee's guidance and recalled memorable games and lessons learned. "I remember that in the basketball gymnasium, and I remember it on the track as well," he said.
A poignant memory shared by Thune was from his senior year district championship game. After missing a crucial shot, Coach Applebee encouraged him with words of support: "'It’s time to get on the bus.' 'And by the way, track starts next week.'" This message underscored resilience and moving forward despite setbacks.
Thune expressed gratitude for Applebee's influence beyond sports. He noted how invested Applebee was in students' success both as a coach and as a high school principal. "He wanted to see them succeed and do well in life," Thune remarked.
Concluding his tribute, Thune acknowledged the lasting impact of Coach Applebee's teachings: "Accept your losses, get to work on the next thing." He conveyed condolences to Applebee's family while expressing personal appreciation for everything he learned from him over the years.
"Rest in peace Coach Applebee," Thune concluded before yielding the floor.
