U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor today, outlining the legislative agenda and priorities for the Republican majority. He emphasized that the American people have given a mandate to President Trump and Republicans.
Thune highlighted illegal immigration as a critical issue from the last election. He announced an upcoming vote on Senator Britt's bipartisan Laken Riley Act, which aims to ensure deportation of illegal immigrants arrested for crimes such as theft and burglary. "Mr. President, this week the Senate is going to vote on Senator Britt’s bipartisan Laken Riley Act," he stated.
Thune also mentioned support for Israel, criticizing Democrats' past reluctance to back related measures. "In November, I promised that if Leader Schumer wouldn’t bring the ICC sanctions bill to the floor, Republicans would," he said.
The agenda includes voting on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act during the 52nd Annual March for Life. Thune explained, "This straightforward bill simply states that a baby born alive after an attempted abortion is entitled to the same protection and medical care that any other newborn baby is entitled to."
Additionally, Thune noted efforts to confirm President Trump's nominees promptly: "We will work to ensure each nominee has a fair process without unnecessary delays or obstruction."
Republicans plan to address key priorities through budget reconciliation. This includes funding border security policies and investing in military readiness and American energy production. Thune stressed extending tax relief from Trump's first administration: "These pro-growth policies put more money in Americans’ pockets."
Thune concluded by reaffirming commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities: "But the American people have chosen the right team to get it done."
