U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor, discussing the ongoing Cabinet confirmation process. This week saw hearings for several nominees, including Pete Hegseth for defense secretary and Marco Rubio for secretary of state.
Thune highlighted that "confirmation hearings began this week with defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth in the Armed Services Committee on Tuesday." He noted that six hearings took place yesterday, marking a record since 2001. The Senate aims to complete 12 nominee hearings by President Trump's inauguration on Monday.
Rubio's hearing at the Foreign Relations Committee was a focal point. Thune praised Rubio's expertise in foreign policy, stating, "Members of that committee are well acquainted with Senator Rubio’s expertise in foreign policy." He emphasized Rubio's approach to international relations, which includes "peace through strength," restoring American leadership, and advancing U.S. interests.
Thune criticized the Biden administration's foreign policy approach, asserting that it has lacked moral clarity and strength. He stated that Rubio would fill this leadership void: "As yesterday made clear, we can expect Senator Rubio to bring a moral clarity to foreign policy that has been sorely lacking in the last four years."
Rubio's stance on China was particularly noted. Thune remarked on his advocacy against China's human rights abuses and his role in passing the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. Thune also acknowledged Rubio's support for freedom fighters in Hong Kong and Taiwan and his commitment to democracy in Latin America.
Reflecting on Rubio's testimony, Thune quoted him: “Every dollar we spend, every program we fund, and every policy we pursue must be justified by the answer to three simple questions: Does it make America safer? Does it make America stronger? Or does it make America more prosperous?”
Thune concluded by expressing anticipation for further discussions about other Trump administration nominees as they proceed through Senate confirmations.
