U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has expressed his support for the swift confirmation of former Congressman Sean Duffy as secretary of transportation. Thune addressed the Senate floor, announcing his intention to file cloture on Duffy's nomination.
The Commerce Committee recently approved Duffy's nomination with a unanimous 28-0 vote. Thune highlighted this unanimity, drawing parallels to the previous confirmation of Secretary Rubio, who also received unanimous committee approval.
Thune emphasized Duffy's qualifications, noting his five-term service in the U.S. House of Representatives and his role as co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force. He stated that Duffy had demonstrated knowledge relevant to the position during his recent hearing.
"Our colleague, Senator Baldwin, said that he is, and I quote, 'the right person for this job,'" Thune remarked. He urged against delaying what he described as an "uncontroversial and qualified nominee."
Thune concluded by stating that if Democrats choose to prolong the voting process on such nominees, it could be done through extended sessions but affirmed that "one way or the other, these nominees will be confirmed."
