Senator Thune addresses tragic plane crash involving Blackhawk helicopter

U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor today, expressing his condolences and concern over a tragic plane crash that occurred in Washington, D.C. The incident involved a passenger flight from Wichita, Kansas, which collided with a Blackhawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport.

In his remarks, Thune stated: “Mr. President, before I begin, I want to comment on last night’s horrific tragedy." He provided details of the accident, saying: “As most now know, last night around 9:00 p.m. a passenger flight out of Wichita, Kansas coming into Reagan National Airport collided with a Blackhawk helicopter based out of Fort Belvoir.”

Authorities have confirmed there are no expected survivors from the crash. Thune acknowledged the gravity of the situation: “There are few words in instances like this.” He extended prayers for those affected and gratitude for rescue personnel who worked through the night searching for survivors.

Thune emphasized that it is too early to determine the cause of the crash but assured that an investigation would follow: “It’s too early to know why last night’s crash occurred. But we’re going to find out.” He mentioned that Congress and federal agencies will be involved in examining the incident to ensure aviation safety.

Concluding his remarks, Thune said: “My prayers today are with all those suffering, with our first responders, and with our Kansas senators and everyone affected by this terrible event.”
