U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor to discuss recent legislative actions and confirmations. He emphasized the Senate's focus on results, highlighting progress in both nominations and legislation.
Thune noted that despite the primary focus on nominees, the Senate has managed to advance several legislative votes. One significant achievement was the passage and signing of the Laken Riley Act by the President last Wednesday. This act marks Congress' initial efforts to address illegal immigration.
"The Laken Riley Act, which the president signed last Wednesday, is Congress’ first installment in our work to combat illegal immigration," Thune stated. The legislation ensures that illegal immigrants who commit certain crimes are detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement rather than being released back into communities.
Thune expressed regret that such a law was not in place earlier, as it might have prevented tragic incidents like the one involving Laken Riley. "Had such a law been in place last year, it is possible that Laken Riley would still be alive today," he said.
He also commended ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to remove dangerous criminals from U.S. streets. "Since President Trump’s inauguration, his border czar and now Homeland Security team – now led by Secretary Noem – have been working around the clock to take murderers, rapists, gang members, and other dangerous criminals into custody in preparation for being deported," Thune remarked.
Highlighting Republican support for these initiatives, Thune pledged continued legislative backing for measures aimed at enhancing public safety and supporting enforcement agencies. "Republicans in Congress are working on legislation to support the president’s efforts," he added.
Looking ahead, Thune expressed eagerness for further progress as the Senate continues its work on confirmations and legislative priorities aimed at serving American interests.
