U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune recently expressed his support for Russell Vought's nomination as director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In remarks delivered on the Senate floor, Thune highlighted Vought's previous experience in the role during President Trump's first administration.
Thune emphasized Vought's qualifications, stating, "Mr. Vought has already served as director of the Office of Management and Budget – in President Trump’s first administration." He noted that this prior experience would enable Vought to "hit the ground running."
According to Thune, two primary economic issues await Vought if confirmed: reducing government regulations and addressing excessive spending. Thune remarked on the impact of regulations, saying they can increase costs for energy bills, housing, cars, and appliances. He criticized what he described as a history of burdensome regulations under the Biden administration.
"Republicans are determined to alleviate that regulatory burden – for the sake of economic growth, and to improve the lives of hardworking Americans," Thune stated. He expressed confidence that Vought would prioritize eliminating these regulations.
On fiscal matters, Thune pointed out concerns about national debt levels projected to reach $52 trillion by 2035. He stressed the importance of addressing spending issues and targeting government waste. "Identifying ways to rein in our spending – and to target government waste – has to be a priority," he said.
Thune also discussed progress in confirming President Trump's nominees since his inauguration. He noted that with Vought's confirmation, 13 nominees had been approved so far—twice as fast compared to previous administrations.
"The Senate will take up additional nominees next week," Thune concluded, indicating an ongoing effort to confirm more appointments swiftly.
