U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) praised President Trump for his efforts in securing the U.S. border, during remarks delivered on the Senate floor. Thune commended Trump's administration for making strides in arresting and deporting individuals who are in the country illegally, highlighting that some of those apprehended were involved in serious crimes.
"Mr. President, President Trump’s border czar was at the Capitol yesterday to update Republican senators on the progress the administration is making on arresting and deporting criminals here illegally," said Thune.
Thune expressed astonishment that certain individuals with criminal backgrounds remained within U.S. borders, noting arrests of members from violent international gangs and those charged with murder, rape, kidnapping, drug trafficking, sexual crimes involving children, and human smuggling.
"Again, it is staggering that these criminals were out there on our nation’s streets," he stated. "And our communities will be safer places without these individuals."
He emphasized Trump's commitment since taking office to curtail illegal immigration as part of fulfilling campaign promises: "Since day one of his administration President Trump has been fulfilling his campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration and secure our border."
Thune acknowledged the significant role immigrants play in America but stressed that legal immigration must be upheld for safety and respect for law: "Immigration is a key part of our country’s story... But we need to ensure that immigration is done legally – for both the safety of our country and to preserve respect for the rule of law."
He described previous years' conditions as chaotic with millions crossing borders illegally and overwhelming law enforcement resources. Thune credited Trump with reducing this chaos: "I am tremendously proud and grateful for the incredible amount of work the president has done so far to make it clear that illegal migration will no longer be tolerated."
Despite progress made under Trump's leadership, Thune noted ongoing challenges requiring Congressional support: "There’s a lot more work to do... And some of that’s going to require Congress’ help." He relayed information from Mr. Homan—President Trump’s border czar—that further resources are necessary for Border Patrol and Immigration enforcement efforts.
Thune also mentioned upcoming legislative actions spearheaded by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), chairing budget committee proceedings aimed at bolstering border security through increased funding: "We will provide resources to increase the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers... obtain barriers and technology needed..."
Concluding his address, Thune reiterated support for continued measures against illegal immigration under Republican-led initiatives: "For too long our country has tolerated rampant illegal immigration... I’m grateful for everything the president is doing... The Republican-led Congress will ensure that the administration has resources needed..."
