U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor regarding the nomination of Jamieson Greer as U.S. trade representative. Thune expressed strong support for Greer's qualifications, citing his extensive background in trade law and international experience.
Thune highlighted Greer's career, which includes time spent as a missionary in Brussels, earning a master's degree from two institutions in Paris, serving as a law clerk for the European Court of Justice, and military service in Turkey and Iraq. Notably, Greer served three years under the Trump administration as chief of staff to then-U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer.
The senator emphasized the importance of expanding opportunities for agriculture producers, particularly those in South Dakota. He criticized the Biden administration's approach to trade, stating that no free trade agreements (FTAs) were negotiated during that period and noting an all-time high agricultural trade deficit.
"Trade is critical to the continued success of American agriculture," Thune stated, pointing out that 20 percent of U.S. agricultural products are exported annually.
Thune expressed optimism about working with Greer to address these issues and expand opportunities for American producers. He noted Greer's commitment to collaborating with Congress and the Senate Finance Committee on these matters.
"I’m very encouraged by the fact that Mr. Greer has expressed his commitment to working closely with the Senate Finance Committee – of which I am a member – and with Congress," said Thune.
