U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor, marking a significant legislative period as the chamber concludes its longest in-session stretch in over 15 years. During this ten-week session, the Senate confirmed 21 members of President Trump's Cabinet at a record pace since 2001.
Thune highlighted the accomplishments, stating: "The Senate has gotten through hearings, markups, and floor votes on 21 Cabinet nominees at a record pace." He also noted that President Trump now has more of his Cabinet in place than any president since George W. Bush.
Legislative efforts focused heavily on border security. The first bill sent to President Trump was the Laken Riley Act, designed to detain criminal illegal immigrants upon arrest for certain crimes. This act was strengthened by amendments from Senators Ernst and Budd.
In addition to confirming nominees, Republicans have been advancing their legislative agenda. Thune emphasized their commitment to securing the border and addressing the fentanyl crisis with the HALT Fentanyl Act: "It'll provide law enforcement with a critical tool to go after the people who are bringing this poison into our country and killing Americans."
The Senate Republicans have also targeted regulatory reforms aimed at reducing what they view as burdensome regulations imposed by the Biden administration. Thune mentioned passing resolutions against taxes and rules affecting energy development and financial privacy.
Thune expressed frustration with Democratic filibusters blocking several bills, including those related to abortion survivors' protection and sports participation based on biological sex: "A few short months ago... they were making plans to destroy the filibuster... Now they've been in the minority for 10 weeks, and they've already used the filibuster three times."
Looking forward, Thune promised continued efforts from Republicans: "Republicans are working to deliver for the American people. And we are just getting started."
