U.S. Senators John Thune and Chris Murphy, along with Representatives Mike Kelly and Jimmy Panetta, have reintroduced the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act. This bipartisan legislation aims to promote physical activity by allowing Americans to use pre-tax health savings accounts (HSA) and flexible spending accounts (FSA) for sports and fitness expenses.
Thune emphasized that "the PHIT Act would reduce some of the cost barriers that Americans face when pursuing healthy lifestyles." He noted that it provides more flexibility with HSAs and FSAs, potentially preventing costly chronic conditions.
Kelly highlighted the bill's impact on youth sports, stating, "This bill gives kids, especially those in underserved or low-income communities, a real chance to play the sport of their choice."
Panetta pointed out the financial challenges faced by working families regarding fitness costs. He said, "The PHIT Act provides a practical solution by allowing families to use pre-tax dollars from their HSA and FSA accounts."
Brendon Plack from the NFL expressed support for the act as it aligns with the league's goal of encouraging active lifestyles among youth.
Todd Smith from the Sports and Fitness Industry Association described the act as a "forward-thinking, bipartisan solution" aimed at making sports and exercise more affordable.
Liz Clark of the Health & Fitness Association praised the initiative as a commonsense approach to making fitness more accessible. She acknowledged Thune, Murphy, Kelly, and Panetta for their leadership in reintroducing this legislation.
