U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor, emphasizing the objectives of an upcoming budget resolution vote. Thune outlined several goals intended to prevent a $4 trillion tax increase, strengthen military readiness, restore energy dominance, secure the border, and reduce spending.

He argued that current government spending is a significant contributor to the growing federal deficit. Thune stated, "You will be voting for a $4 trillion tax increase on our economy and on the American people," highlighting the potential financial impact on individuals earning less than $400,000 if the 2017 tax reforms are not extended.

Thune defended the benefits of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which, according to him, led to additional revenue beyond initial projections. He referenced the Council of Economic Advisers' prediction that revenues could increase by around $4 trillion if the tax law becomes permanent. Thune further criticized Democrat-backed spending and executive actions, such as the Inflation Reduction Act and student loan forgiveness, for their role in exacerbating fiscal deficits.

The Senate Majority Leader challenged Democrats to support the resolution to extend tax relief, arguing it would benefit American families, businesses, and the economy. Thune concluded with a call for unity within his party to support the resolution, invoking the need for "pro-growth policies, particularly making permanent the tax policy that was passed in 2017."
