U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune spoke on the Senate floor on efforts to swiftly approve President Trump’s foreign policy team, emphasizing America's interests and security priorities. Thune praised actions taken by President Trump in the first three months of his administration, highlighting efforts against terrorism, securing the release of hostages, and dealing with countries like China and Iran.
"Mr. President, President Trump has made it clear that his foreign policy is centered on advancing America’s interests and keeping Americans safe," Thune stated. He criticized the previous administration's foreign policy approach, describing it as weak and unfavorable to American interests. He said, "On President Biden’s watch, the world grew more unstable," mentioning specific examples like Afghanistan and efforts to engage with Iran.
This week, the Senate is focused on confirming various ambassadorial nominees. Thune noted the confirmation of a new ambassador to Japan and looked ahead to a vote on ambassadors to Panama and Israel. Regarding the Japanese alliance, he stated, "And as China’s military takes more aggressive actions in this part of the world, our relationship with Japan will only grow in importance."
Thune also addressed concerns over China's influence, particularly through its role in the fentanyl supply chain and potential foothold in the Western Hemisphere. He noted, "And having a Senate-confirmed ambassador to Panama – which we will later today – will help advance this goal."
On the U.S.-Israel relationship, Thune remarked on the ongoing conflict following attacks by Hamas and emphasized the need for American support: "President Trump has made it clear that the United States stands squarely in Israel’s corner."
Highlighting party differences, Thune criticized Democrats for their stance on Israel-related issues, including filibustering a sanctions bill and blocking weapon shipments. He called for continued support for Israel, stating, "And I know that once he is confirmed Ambassador Huckabee will be a strong and supportive voice for Israel and for America’s interests from his post in Jerusalem."
