U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate, highlighting the achievements of the first 100 days of President Donald Trump's new administration. Thune emphasized progress on key elements of the Republican agenda such as border security, tax relief, and energy production.
"Mr. President, it’s been 100 days of the new Trump administration – and President Trump is delivering," Thune began. He praised Trump's efforts to restore American strength and extend tax relief, stating that the president has made significant strides in these areas.
Thune remarked on the administration's actions to address energy issues, claiming that President Trump declared a national emergency on energy and took steps to increase American energy production. This included ending mandates on electric vehicles and reducing energy regulations.
He also noted Trump's issuance of an executive order intended to prevent "biological males from hijacking sports for women and girls." According to Thune, Trump is working with Congress to make permanent the tax relief implemented during his first term.
On national defense and border security, Thune stated that there is ongoing legislative work to fund the military, secure the border, and reform government spending. "At the top of any list of President Trump’s accomplishments is the incredible progress the president has made when it comes to securing our border," Thune added.
Thune cited significant reductions in encounters at the southern U.S. border with a reported 94% decrease in illegal crossings. He mentioned that U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported drastically lower numbers in February and March 2025 compared to the previous year.
The senator emphasized President Trump's focus on addressing illegal immigration and the fentanyl crisis, highlighting targeted actions against gang members and other criminal elements.
Concluding his speech, Thune expressed optimism for future developments: "If this is what President Trump has accomplished in his first three months, I can’t wait to see what’s to come."
