In a recent press conference in Washington, U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) commented on President Trump's first 100 days in office. Thune called this period a "historic 100 days" and noted, "Promises made, promises kept."
Thune highlighted the significant reduction in illegal crossings at the southern border, attributing the decrease to the new administration. "The open-borders policy that had been pursued by the Biden administration led to all kinds of chaos at our southern border, lots of dangerous elements coming into the United States, and about – if you can believe this – 12,000 or so people per day coming across our southern border illegally," Thune remarked. Under President Trump's leadership, he noted, the number has decreased dramatically. "That number plummets from 12,000 down to 230 a day."
He emphasized the administration's success in addressing border security and cited a significant drop of "about 94, 95 percent" in illegal crossings over the year. Thune reaffirmed the commitment to securing the border through legislative means, highlighting the role of budget resolutions and reconciliation bills in ensuring resources for maintaining border security.
Thune concluded by stating that the Republican Congress and Senate are focused on achieving "good, strong military security; that we have good, strong border security; and that we have good, strong economic security in this country." He pledged to continue working on the administration's priorities, collaborating with President Trump, and fulfilling the commitments made to the American people over the next 100 days.
