U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor today, expressing concerns over recent actions by the Democrats. Thune began by acknowledging the passing of Supreme Court Justice David Souter and congratulating Cardinal Robert Prevost on becoming Pope Leo XIV, marking a historic moment for American Catholics.
Thune criticized the Democrats for ending bipartisan work on the GENIUS Act and filibustering its progression in the Senate. He noted that some Democrats who supported the bill in committee voted against it on the floor, suggesting that their actions might be aimed at denying legislative victories to President Trump or Republicans.
He emphasized that providing a regulatory framework for stablecoins is a bipartisan issue, developed through negotiations involving both parties. Thune argued that obstructing progress seems to be the current priority for Democrats.
Shifting focus to nominations, Thune expressed frustration over what he described as deliberate delays by Democrats in confirming President Trump's civilian nominees. He pointed out that 57 out of 58 nominees required cloture votes, an unprecedented situation in recent administrations. Despite some nominees receiving support from both parties, they faced extended confirmation processes.
Thune insisted that this approach serves no purpose and vowed to continue efforts to confirm President Trump's team so he can fulfill his duties effectively. He called on Democrats to reconsider their stance on both the GENIUS Act and nominee confirmations.
