U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune recently addressed the Senate floor, emphasizing his commitment to Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. Thune highlighted the significance of May as Military Appreciation Month, recognizing Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.
Reflecting on a pivotal moment 20 years ago, Thune recounted how Ellsworth was once recommended for closure by the Defense Department. "On May 13, 2005 – 20 years ago, Madam President – the Defense Department announced that it was recommending South Dakota’s Ellsworth Air Force Base for closure," he stated.
Thune described the efforts made to keep the base operational. "Some thought it would take a political deal," he said, adding that they instead focused on proving Ellsworth's value through hard work and data analysis. The campaign culminated in an 8-1 vote by the BRAC commission to keep Ellsworth open.
The senator detailed subsequent developments at Ellsworth, including its designation as the first Main Operating Base for the B-21 Raider bomber in 2021. He also expressed support for Troy Meink's nomination as Air Force secretary, praising Meink's extensive experience and connection to South Dakota.
"Madam President, Troy Meink is someone who has the experience to lead the Air Force into the next frontier," Thune concluded.
