U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune recently addressed the Senate floor in recognition of National Police Week, highlighting the dedication and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the nation. During his speech, Thune expressed gratitude for the service of these officers, emphasizing their role in safeguarding communities.
Thune acknowledged that police officers possess a unique protective instinct not only for their loved ones but for all individuals. He noted, "They don’t just volunteer to step between their loved ones and danger; they volunteer to step between any of us and danger – not because they know us, but simply because we are human beings and need to be protected."
The senator recounted specific incidents involving South Dakota law enforcement officers who demonstrated bravery in the line of duty. One such officer was shot while pursuing a suspect earlier this year. Another was Moody County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok, who was killed last year after being struck by a car driven by a fleeing suspect. Thune remarked on Prorok's heroism: "He knew that he was placing himself in danger, knew that he could be risking his life. But he went anyway."
Thune also extended his appreciation to police families who endure long hours and face uncertainties due to the nature of their loved ones' work. He stated, "It’s not always easy to have a police officer for a husband or a wife, a mom or a dad."
In addition to acknowledging local law enforcement, Thune praised the United States Capitol Police for their daily efforts in ensuring safety at the Capitol amidst inherent dangers.
Concluding his remarks, Thune expressed deep gratitude towards all law enforcement personnel: "Thank you for serving our communities, for putting your lives on the line every day."
