U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed a press conference in Washington, where he discussed the priorities of Senate Republicans concerning a reconciliation bill passed by the House. Thune emphasized the commitment of Senate Republicans to "do our part on reconciliation," expressing eagerness to work on modifications to strengthen and improve the bill.
The proposed legislation aims to address various issues, including military modernization, energy dominance, border security, and preventing a $4.5 trillion tax increase. Additionally, it includes measures for deficit reduction that promise significant savings.
Thune outlined the Republican agenda: "It talks about modernizing our military, making America energy dominant, securing our border." He further noted that Democrats have expressed strong opposition to the bill as per their leader's statements.
Highlighting what he views as Democratic opposition to key elements of the bill, Thune stated: "What’s interesting... is the fact that Senate Democrats have said they are going to fight it with everything they’ve got." He claimed Democrats would be voting for a significant tax increase affecting those earning under $400,000 annually.
Despite anticipated challenges from Democrats, Thune affirmed Republican determination: "But Republican senators are anxious to move forward." He underscored collaboration efforts with President Biden and House colleagues on this legislative agenda.
