U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) appeared on The Brian Kilmeade Show on Fox Radio to discuss several pressing topics, including economic growth, budget reconciliation, entitlement programs, rescissions packages, and the Russia sanctions bill.
Thune addressed pro-growth policies by emphasizing that economic expansion leads to increased government revenue. He stated, "[W]hen you have growth in the economy, government revenues go up." He argued that despite current high deficits, the proposed legislation would not exacerbate them due to anticipated economic growth and significant spending cuts. "Add to that the almost a couple trillion dollars in cuts that are in the bill," he said.
On budget reconciliation efforts, Thune noted President Biden's commitment to achieving legislative goals. "The president is very committed to getting this done," he remarked. Thune expressed hope for Senate approval of a package by July 4th.
Discussing Medicaid reform, Thune highlighted efforts to strengthen entitlement programs while ensuring they serve intended beneficiaries. "[W]e are strengthening and reforming Medicaid," he said. He stressed the importance of making Medicaid more effective and efficient for those who need it most.
Regarding rescissions packages aimed at reducing discretionary spending, Thune explained their role alongside mandatory spending adjustments achieved through reconciliation. "These rescissions bills are ways in which we can find additional savings," he noted.
Finally, on the topic of Russia sanctions, Thune indicated ongoing collaboration with the White House to refine legislation supporting diplomatic efforts in Ukraine. "[T]he White House is working with our team here on some refinements," he mentioned.
