U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) addressed the Senate floor, discussing progress on legislation aimed at providing permanent tax relief and enhancing national security. Thune emphasized the collaborative efforts within the Senate and between the Senate and House to produce a comprehensive bill.

Thune noted that portions of the bill from the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Armed Services Committee have been released, focusing on energy security and national defense. "Energy is the critical resource," he stated, highlighting its importance for national defense, economic stability, and affordability for Americans.

The proposed legislation aims to reverse policies from the Biden administration that Thune argues have constrained American energy production. It seeks to suspend a natural gas tax and modify electric vehicle mandates perceived as burdensome to the electric grid.

In terms of defense, Thune underscored concerns about China surpassing U.S. capabilities in key areas. The bill includes provisions for $29 billion in shipbuilding, $25 billion for missile defense under the president's Golden Dome initiative, $23 billion for advanced manufacturing capacity, and $16 billion for developing next-generation weapons.

Thune expressed gratitude towards committee chairs including Chairman Wicker and Chairman Capito for their contributions to crafting this legislation. He anticipates further text releases from other committees soon with an aim to consider this bill on the Senate floor in upcoming weeks.
