U.S. Senator John Thune from South Dakota met with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson from Louisiana following their respective elections to key leadership positions in the 119th Congress. Thune has been elected as Senate majority leader, while Johnson has been nominated as Speaker of the House.
After their meeting, both leaders issued statements reflecting on their discussions and future plans. "In order to enact President Trump’s agenda, it will take each and every Republican working together," said Leader-elect Thune. He added that he looks forward to partnering with Speaker Johnson to reverse the Biden-Harris agenda and advance President Trump's priorities for the American people.
Speaker Johnson expressed readiness for collaboration in the upcoming Congress. "Leader Thune and I are ready to hit the ground running and put America first in the 119th Congress," he stated. He emphasized a clear mandate from the American people for Republicans to work with President Trump on issues such as securing borders, cutting taxes, reducing inflation, slashing bureaucratic red tape, restoring America's dominance, rebuilding the military, and instilling fear in overseas enemies.
Both leaders conveyed optimism about America's future under Republican leadership starting in 2025.
