U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune participated in an interview with Guy Benson on Fox News Radio, addressing several pressing issues. During the conversation, Thune spoke about the recent plane crash in Washington, D.C., stating, "[I]t was a tragic accident. And on a day like today, all you can do is pray for those who were on the plane and their loved ones, as well as the first responders who have worked through the night in frigid waters searching for survivors." He added that he and his wife Kimberley are keeping those affected in their prayers and have been in contact with relevant agencies to understand how the incident occurred.
Thune assured listeners of a thorough investigation involving the FAA and NTSB: “[W]e will get a readout, and there will be a full investigation... if there are things that need to be fixed or changed that Congress is responsible for taking action on, we’ll certainly do that."
The discussion also covered President Trump's nominees. Thune commented on their progress: “[T]hey’re each receiving a fair process in the Senate... without handicapping it, I think these noms have a path to getting across the finish line." He noted challenges posed by Democrats during confirmations but expressed confidence in qualified candidates like John Ratcliffe.
Regarding budget reconciliation, Thune emphasized coordination between the Senate and House: “[T]he numbers that I always tell people you have to keep in mind are 218 and 51." He highlighted ongoing efforts to align strategies with Speaker Johnson's team.
Thune further explained Senate procedures concerning budget reconciliation: “The Senate was created uniquely... it takes 60 votes... one exception is budget reconciliation." This process allows certain legislative actions with 51 votes under unified government control. Thune mentioned discussions with the parliamentarian regarding procedural limits while recalling similar Democratic efforts during previous unified control.
